The protection provided by Laser Safety Glasses is normally determined by their Optical Density (OD). OD >3 means that in theory less than 1/1000 laser beam energy will pass through the filter and OD >4 means that in theory less than 1/10000 laser beam energy will pass through the filter.
Limitations of the Optical Density
Laser safety glasses are designed to protect your eyes from accidental exposure to laser beams but will not provide protection from extended exposure. A quick moving laser beam will not harm your eyes because the energy from the laser will be absorbed by the laser safety glasses. Extended exposure to a concentrated high power laser beam however can quickly destroy laser safety glasses.
Even with a high OD such as 6 or 7, a high power laser beam will quickly destroy laser safety glasses. For example a concentrated 1 watt 532nm YAG laser beam can burn a hole in the filter of laser safety glasses in seconds no matter how high the OD is making a high OD useless.
Dragon Lasers quality laser safety glasses are built with adequate optical density and also provide clear vision. The best quality and prices on the market.
How to choose laser safety glasses: Different laser safety glasses will provide protection against different color/wavelength lasers so make sure the glasses you choose will protect against the color/wavelength of your laser. For example if you buy a 500mW 532nm green laser module, make sure you choose glasses that will protect from green/532nm.
